Engine Mountings & Bushes

What are engine mountings & bushes?

Engine mountings and bushes are components that serve as protective connections between the engine and the chassis of the vehicle. These mountings and bushes ensure that the engine is secured in place but still have some element of movement as forces around the engine change with the physics of power transfer and the driving conditions.

There are different types of engine mountings. These are:

  • Standard rubber, PU or metal engine mountings

  • Hydraulic engine mountings

  • Electric (active) engine mounting

How do I choose the correct engine mountings & bushes?

Engine mountings and bushes are both engine and vehicle specific. Mountings with different part numbers can look identical to each other however there can be subtle yet critical differences that can affect compatibility and longevity and even the warranty of the part.

Here are some factors to observe when choosing the correct replacement mountings and bushes:

  • Number of gears (i.e. 5 speed or 6 speed etc)

  • Manual or semi / fully automatic

  • Transmission type / transmission code

  • Engine code

  • Engine BHP / KW

  • Vehicle manufacture date (this is not the date the vehicle was registered but the date it was made

  • Engine number sequence (up to or after as specific number/letter

  • VIN (chassis number) sequence (up to or after as specific number/letter

What brand of engine mountings & bushes should I choose?

All aftermarket brands are designed to meet or exceed the original specification however there are not as many makers of mountings and bushes as there are for air filters for example. The relatively limited availability of these parts means less choice of brands and the part you select may just be which part is available a the time of your need. Brands such as Corteco, Firsline and Borg & Beck have a solid reputation for quality.

How can I tell my engine mountings & bushes needs replacing?

It you are not sure which mounting or bush is failing or damaged you may need to speak to a a qualified mechanic who should be able to diagnose the problem. Here are some symptoms that may indicate that your mounting or bushes need replacing:

  • Knocking noise when driving

  • Increased vibration from the engine

  • Excessive movement of the engine

  • Engine has shifted to one side

  • Visual inspection shows damage
